I was in NZ in 2005 for the snapper classic and was a guest at the NZ casting championship.
I was Uk champion twice, European ground castion champ 3 times and gold medallist twice with the England team. I could help with advice on techniques and with a few videos via other websites but do not want to upset moderators or the website owner. If it's ok, let me know and i'll post links that may help.
Roj

Category: Distance and Tournament Casting

Karvinator Rocks Casting

Well done to that man Karvin the ( Karvinator) Chin posting 225 metres, casting in nz is getting right out there and i suspect he has not finished either. He is being guided by Jeff Murray who was undefeated in his casting reign in NZ a few years ago. He, Jeff, has always had a great technical side and it is good to see him come back into casting. I have always had a dream to put together a casting team to take away to compete and now with several casters in the in the 215 to 220's we may just see the light. Next year I am with the help of others, starting a new casting association in NZ just for casting. We will follow more European lines and it will not affect the nzaca. The politics in getting change is too much like hard work with stirrers at work as i type but they will fall by the weighside and this casting club will set a change in place to help those who want more improvment and to perform at a high level. If potshots and digs are all you can mange then dont become involved...no politics just casting for distance and more distance. We propose to do away with accuracy and have meets for practical technical swapping of ideas. Not all will agree, this i know but there will be an open door policy for those wishing to improve. Almost all the top casters are on board with only a few small details of what they would like included and then we are all go to launch. Our first positive step is in order with a team going to Oz in 2009 to represent NZ in the casting part of their national champs AAA. We have booked and keen to go. If this is the type of thing you are interested in send an email to gregsmealfishing@xtra.co.nz
Outline what you want for your casting and we will see if we can do it.

Category: Distance and Tournament Casting

Learning Freespool Pendulum Casting

Went out today to have another crack at the pendulum, minus some mono to get the spool down about 3mm. this worked out a lot better than the other day. had a couple of birdcasts but this was when the cast was anything but smooth and i'd lose sight of the sinker. otherwise the line peeled off with no problem.
i managed one cracker of a cast warming up with an overhead thump, which took little effort and was the best cast of the day. my pendulum casts were on average well short of my normal overhead thump. i'm casting out into the ocean with just a 4oz sinker, so i dont know the exact distance i'm casting. next time i head out i'll cast over ground and take some measurements. i'd be interested in what distances people are getting, particularly beginners like me. i'd also like to know what distances i should aim for, as i'm still learning and what gains i should work towards.
one thing that i noted today was that my pendulum casts were too low and flat. with my normal overhead thump i can get a good high release at a good angle, but with the pendulum i feel that my release angle is too shallow.

Category: Distance and Tournament Casting

Okuma Magnetix MG30CS

Hi Casters

Well Big Boy anyway. The Magnetix arrived a few days ago. Sure is a nice looking reel, well constructed. Took it down the beach for some practice casts. Nothing long, just getting used to using a revolving spool. Found the Mag setting that suited the gear I was using. No horrendous birds nests, a few little snarlys only.

Didn't try any power casting as my tennis elbow is still hurting like hell. Just gentle overhead thumping. Even with that managed a 90 yarder. So elbow get better and then I will see what this reel can do. I might add all my rods are for Fixed Spool reels, so I aint expecting to much yet. Guess eventually a rod suited to a revolving spool will be on my shopping list.

Cheers Trev

Category: Distance and Tournament Casting

Hi and Welcome

To the TT Casting Sub forum. I am sure we will have a lot of fun here. Share our interests in long distance casting, either with bait, or with bare leads. Whether competition or fishing. At times a long cast is essential, other times not. Being able to choose, is the essence. This is a place for us to grow together, By sharing, and through that we learn.
All those years ago I was what was called an overhead thumper. Ok I caught fish. But I was killing myself , pushing the cast. Now there are easier ones, sure they look complicated, but once you get the swing of things, well they just come natural.

My best until three months ago was about 80 yards. Ya won't get much more outa an an overhead thump. Moved into the power casts, and now up to 166 yards. (bare lead) which with bait means about 120 yards.

I want to do a 200 yarder. And am sure I will before summer is gone.

I practice on the beach which is three minutes from my home.

Well at least I am honest, and I guess we all will have to be here.

Its okay to lie about the size of your fish (lol) but never about your cast.

Cheers Trev

Category: Distance and Tournament Casting
